What is Tales Toolkit? - LINK

To call it a high-impact language intervention for the early years wouldn't be wrong, but we prefer to think of it as a super-powered storytelling resource. Tales Toolkit is an approach to oracy that paves the way for literacy with play and connection. We do this by elevating practitioner skills with online training and providing high-quality physical resources to enable storytelling across the provision. Every child has a story, and we enable settings to make space for each child's unique story in an inclusive way that reduces the burden on teachers at the same time.

What's included in the subscription?

The subscription comes in a few parts:

1. Online training programme, supporting practitioners of every experience level through core principles, modelling storytelling and techniques to encourage mark-making and writing. Training sessions are delivered periodically so the children can develop alongside the practitioners, giving time for embedding before introducing new ideas.

2. A pack of physical resources (RRP £100) to be used in story-making. The pack includes a variety of items to allow for flexible and adaptable storytelling.

3. Ongoing CPD, support and downloadable resources. Our online portal is chock-full of webinars from early years experts (including Alistair Bryce-Clegg), downloadable templates and illustrations for storymaking and an inspiration gallery to celebrate innovations from other settings. We offer tailored support through termly drop-in sessions and 1-2-1s with our founder and ex-teacher, Kate Shelley.

What's the evidence?

Tales Toolkit was backed by research on the importance of storytelling from the beginning, and we're putting together an impressive research catalogue all our own. Check out this report from Goldsmiths University that shows impact across the EYFS, including Language and Communication, Literacy and SEMH. It even shows that Tales Toolkit closes the boys' writing gap! We have been working with the EEF and are now awaiting results from a pilot study that was conducted in 2024.
