In this interview I’m joined by two experts in the field of early childhood education: Professor Dominic Wyse and Charlotte Hacking.
Dominic is a renowned researcher and author, serving as Professor of Early Childhood and Primary Education at University College London’s Institute of Education. With decades of experience, Dominic is widely respected for his work on curriculum, literacy, and pedagogy.
Charlotte is an experienced teacher and consultant, currently the Learning and Programmes Director at the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE). Her passion for the power of high-quality literature in children’s learning has been transformative, and her work with CLPE continues to inspire educators and schools across the country.
Together, they have collaborated on their latest book, ‘The Balancing Act: An Evidence-Based Approach to Teaching Phonics, Reading and Writing’. The book presents a balanced approach to teaching literacy, aiming to improve all children’s learning and life chances. The book dismantles polarised debates about the teaching of phonics and analyses the latest scientific evidence of what truly works. It illustrates how phonics, reading, and writing should be taught through the creativity of ‘real books’, and showcases why their new approach “The Double Helix’ is more effective than narrow phonics methods.
We explore the inspiration behind the book, its key themes, and how it can support teachers and leaders in achieving the phonics, reading an writing balance that every child deserves.
